Citizen Takes Us In A Surreal Identity Crisis In Their New Video “In The Middle Of It All”

Finding yourself can often make you feel more lost.

American rock quintet, Citizen, takes us into a surrealistic quest/crisis in finding one’s identity in their new Christopher Good-directed video “In The Middle Of It All.” We follow the journey of a girl who starts off by listing the pre-determined “basic” routines (think of eating kale, pilates, procreating, etc.) before she hops into a car that takes her to a forest where she brings an offering. Each journey shows the protagonist in different costumes, going through different phases and trying to stick to the bizarre ritual that feels alien to us. These strange, eerie activities and wardrobe the protagonist religiously maintains can be equally translated to our tendency to conform whatever society makes us do without really reflecting who we truly are. Watch below:

In regards to the video, Citizen gave the creative freedom to director Christopher Good, who also directed the “Jet” video. Citizen’s Nick Hamm shared that “Watching the character search desperately for identity and it ultimately being fruitless is something I think a lot of us confront at some point.”

“In The Middle Of It All” is from Citizen’s upcoming record As You Please, which will be out on October 6th. Citizen has been working on the album over the year and is now getting ready to hit the road with a headlining tour that includes Sorority Noise and Great Grandpa. Get ready to see them onstage:
