Maps & Atlases’ “Ringing Bell” Is For Inexplicable Moments That Make Sense

Chicago trio Maps & Atlases take us into a rock/pop trip into our inner unexplainbble thoughts in their new single “Ringing Bell.” Layered with bouncy chords and groovy hooks, “Ringing Bell” sounds like a celebratory track where the lyrics make sense and doesn’t at the same time. It’s deceptively upbeat that would never make you think it was born out of a loss. Stream below:

“I wrote a few lines of ‘Ringing Bell’ the day that my dad passed away. I wanted to express the strangeness of witnessing such a surreal transformation undertaken by someone so close to me, but I didn’t try to finish the song in that state, as I knew I didn’t yet have any perspective on the loss.” explained vocalist Dave Davison. “That lack of perspective itself became a theme in the song. After he passed, I felt the need to put some shoes on my dad, despite the protest of the people picking him up that he wouldn’t need them. I describe this moment in the song, as it reflects both a general and specific disorientation of loss, with the line, ‘I thought you still might need my shoes / somehow I’d like to still believe / that they might be of some use.'”

“Ringing Bell” is from Maps & Atlases’ upcoming album, Lightlessness is Nothing New, which will be out on June 1st and was largely influenced by Dave’s loss of his father. The trio will start touring this month, so see them live:
