Zaena and Jason Maek pay tribute to Chicago in their new video “Get You Right” where they also address current political issues, police brutality, and student debt. Providing glimpses into their neighborhood spots (like Harold’s Chicken) to bigger national issues, Zaena and Jason give us a two-way perspective of home. The local spots you frequent an irreplaceable comfort of familiarity, yet the current issues in the air reminds you that ‘home’ is far from being perfect. Blending elements of hip-hop and house, Zaena and Jason also teaches us the Chicago-rooted dance trend known as ‘foot working’ in their video (directed by Jason). Watch below:

“Although my family moved here for a better life, America still suffers from many problems my homeland currently experiences ranging from political corruption to police brutality,” explained Zaena, who is a Libyan refugee. “It was important for me to point that in hopes to start a conversation to create change.”

According to Jason, “this son and visual are both fun and insightful. Most people only hear about the negatives of inner city Chicago culture. Zaena and I wanted to remind the world that there are a lot of amazing bright spots as well.”

The duo is currently on their Freshman Tour.
