Mike Krol Brings Back Rock To Its Primitive Form In “Little Drama”

If you ask any rock artist how they come up with their sound, most of them will probably answer that it starts with a riff – the fetal stage of any great song. Afterwards, they go on adding synthesizers, some other genre elements, and vocals, which is fun but loses its primitive flavor. Mike Krol preserves this initial rawness while still building a bursting groove in his new single “Little Drama.” It’s a rock bomb to your ears:

The track was “born out of a simple challenge: to make the simplest, most primitive ‘rock riff’ progression ever” explained Mike. “‘Little Drama’ summarizes my daily struggles. It has brash, over-the-top aggressive verses with a chorus that reveals all of the confrontation and toughness that was just described in the verses was internal and an imaginary scenario that’ll most likely never be carried out. I suppose it’s the Midwestern in me to be polite, kind and apologetic always on the outside – while on the inside, keeping a list of names of everyone who’s done you wrong and bottling up all your anger until one day it explodes.”

“Little Drama” is from Mike’s upcoming album Power Chords, which will be out on January 29th via Merge Records. The album is the byproduct of Mike’s temporary breakup with music. After releasing his successful 2015 album Turkey and touring the world, Mike went through an existential crisis where he wrestled with his relationship with rock’n’roll. After taking some time to reflect and exploring/rediscovering his sound, Mike is coming back in full force with Power Chords. And speaking of coming back, he will start hitting the road again next February.
