Marion Belle (aka Fatal Jamz) and Sam Mehran (aka Test Icicles) have released their collaborative EP Marion Belle & Sam Mehran present: MELT last Friday. Along with the record, they dropped the video “Bad Bitches” where we see a gal perform a stunning choreography in vintage 90s cinematic aesthetics. “Bad Bitches” is glam rock filled with the sparkling precision of pop paired with the fraying edginess of rock’n’roll. There is a dusty feel to the song that imbues a retro flavor. “Bad Bitches” is a retrospection of making wrong decisions (ie falling for the wrong person), but it also addresses struggling with your own doubts. “Sweet dreams I’m telling her my story / These demons never leave my head” chant the duo. Marion Belle is known for his works as Fatal Jamz, which formed back in 2013. Described as “a true heir to Freddie Mercury and Johnny Thunders” by Sex Pistols’ founder Steve Jones, Marion has performed with artists Sky Ferreira, Smith Westerns, and Weyes Blood.

Sam Mehran is known for being one third of the group Test Icicles, which he founded with his friends Dev Hynes and Rory Atwell. Sam and Marion originally met via email but soon started songsmithing together in Los Angeles. From February until July 2018, the duo started working on their collaborative album MELT.

On July 27th, 2018, Sam Mehran took his own life after a longtime struggle with depression.

“I think that our bond was profound because we both felt, after all we had each been through, we had been brought together for a reason,” shared Marion. “And that reason was to help each other to not give up. Sam lived and created in a different way. It was actual magic. And I knew every day that this chance to create with him was going to be one of the greatest treasures of my life. He was incredibly happy and up, up to that very last day we were together. We were going to take on the world, defeat all our own curses, and he was going to be everything he ever wanted to be. In losing Sam, so many people lost the light of their life. And the world lost so much incredible music.”

MELT was mixed by Sam’s friend/SSION collaborator Nick Weiss (Teengirl Fantasy) and is out now almost a year after Sam’s passion. “It became important for me to finish it bc the songs are the story of our friendship and he is eternally alive in them. I know he is watching and I know he is with me,” shared Marion.
