UK band The Reytons illustrate the struggles that many working-class families are facing during this holiday season in their new video “Shoebox.” While we get bombarded by festive carols and holiday ads, “Shoebox” captures the unglamorous reality that many people are facing by presenting us an intimate narrative of a family who faces financial adversities. “Shoebox” is built on ear-splitting riffs where the striking guitars and smashing drums convey the anxiety felt by many during this time:
“One of the most important things for me when it comes to writing songs is writing something real, something relatable. This is by far one of the realest songs we’ve ever written. Through a combination of personal experiences and the lives of close friends around us, ‘Shoebox’ describes the heart-breaking reality of being forced to do what you need to do to survive and provide. This track is for those who need to hear it and for those who don’t, to share it… It’s more than you’ll ever know.”
“Shoebox” is from the band’s upcoming EP May Seriously Harm You and Others Around You, which will be out on February 19th, 2021.
